For centuries black men and women have been told they have “bad hair.”  So much so that straightening products and procedures have become a multi-billion dollar business.  Hair is harvested, at times unknowingly, from all over the world to be used in weaves and wigs.  It has become common practice for people to abuse their hair to the point that is all falls out or is hopelessly burned from overuse of chemical relaxers.  Indeed, thousands of people report to hospitals every year with serious burns on their scalps resulting from botched relaxer application.  The reality is that having “good hair” has become more important than financial security and safety for many people.  Treating nappy hair to make it look straight is very expensive, as are high-quality human hair weaves.  It has become a status symbol among the black community to have straight, flowing hair, no matter what the consequences.  The reality is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with nappy hair, but that does not seem to matter.
